Residents of the Upper Mississippi River Valley receive access to health care from award-winning physicians and facilities at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, a Mayo Health System, both in La Crosse.

Gundersen Lutheran’s accolades include the 2010 Health Grades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, certification as the first “Quality Breast Center of Excellence” in the country by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program and ranking as a Top 100 Heart Hospital in 2005. Gundersen Lutheran also recently received approval for the “construction of a $10 million wind farm project north of Lewiston, MN, as part of its efforts to become energy independent by 2014.

Franciscan Skemp is part of the Mayo Health System, a network of clinics and hospitals throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin that also boasts Mayo Clinic, a facility in Rochester, MN, named to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” for nearly 20 years.

Medical research
Gundersen Lutheran and Franciscan Skemp partner with the three La Crosse higher education institutions – UW-La Crosse, Viterbo University and Western Technical College – through the La Crosse Medical Health-Science Consortium, which was constructed in 2000. The consortium serves as a hub for training and research for both students and medical professionals alike, many times in cooperation.
